A bidentate chelating ligand which forms complexes with many transition metals such as RuCl2(bipy)2, which is a useful precursor to mixed ligand complexes such as [Ru(bipy)3]Cl2 which is a well known luminophore. [Fe(bipy)3]2+ is used for the colorimetric analysis of iron ions.1,2 Ruthenium complexs and platinum complexes of bipy exhibit intense luminescence, which has practical applications.3 2,2' -dipyridyl is used as a chelating agent in biochemistry, for example, as a potent inhibitor of prolyl hydroxylase activity of collagen and elastin,4 for attenuation of cerebral vasospasm in rabbit5 and reduction of histological damage in rats6.
