A reagent for organic synthesis. Used as an electrophile in Friedel-Crafts reactions for the synthesis of aryl sulfoxides,1 synthesis of sulfonamides from primary or secondary amines using ultrasound,2 reaction with lithium amides followed by 3-chloroperoxybenzoic acid oxidization of the resulting sulfinamides to provide primary, secondary, and tertiary alkane-, arene- and heteroarenesulfonamides in high yields,3 and synthesis of β-keto phenylsulfoxides from carbonyl compounds bearing an active methylene group.4 Aminolysis and hydrolysis of of methyl benzenesulfinate have been studied.5,6
