A reagent for organic synthesis. Applied as starting material for synthesis of PET HSV-tk Gene Reporter Probe 9-(4-[18F]Fluoro-3-hydroxymethylbutyl)guanine ([18F]FHBG), and synthesis of methyl 5,7-dimethoxy-3,4-naphthoquinone-2-carboxylate and its 8-bromo analog. Also employed in synthesis of penciclovir involving a highly N9 selective alkylation of 2-amino-6-chloropurine with 2-(2-phenyl-1,3-dioxane-5-yl)ethanol, and modification of Gel type vinylbenzyl chloride/styrene/divinylbenzene copolymers.
