A regioselective chlorinating and oxidizing reagent, used as source for chlorine in radical reactions and various electrophilic additions. Applied for halogenations of deactivated aromatics in trifluoromethanesulfonic acid and BF3-H2O,1 synthesis of aryl chlorides from arylboronic acids,2 oxidation of several thiol derivatives by combination with dilute hydrochloric acid,3 organocatalytic enantioselective α-chlorination of aldehydes,4,5 conversion of cinnamic acids and propiolic acids to the corresponding α-halostyrenes and 1-halo-1-alkynes in Hunsdiecker reactions,6 and mild palladium-catalyzed chlorination, bromination, and iodination of arene C-H bonds.7
