The most commonly available ruthenium compound. The precursor to many hundreds of chemical compounds. A catalyst for oxidation of tertiary amines,1 alcohols 2 and phosphorous acid 3 and for the selective hydrogenation of unsaturated aldehydes.Recently applied for the synthesis of 2-ethyl-3-methylquinolines from anilines and trialkylamine,5 for acylation of alcohols, phenols, and thiols,6 for conversion of aldehydes to 1,1-diacetates under mild conditions,7 for catalyzing synthesis of unsymmetrical diorganyl selenides,8 for the metathesis of 1-octene9 and for catalyzing synthesis of quinolines from anilines and N-allylic compounds.10
