An important reagent in organometallic chemistry, providing a convenient source of the PF6ˉ anion.1 Commonly used as a solvent in organic synthesis and supporting electrolyte in electrochemistry. Has been used for investigations of ferrocene, N,N’-bis(salicylidene)ethylene-diaminato-cobalt(II)/(III), Co(salen) and its one electron oxidation product in various solvents, and analyses of hexaaminobenzene derivatives [e.g. hexakis(dimethylamino) benzene] in CH2Cl2 and CH3CN.2 Also used as supporting electrolyte in research of investigating the influence of electronic and structural effects on the oxidative behavior of nickel porphyrins,3 the one-electron oxidation of hydroxy(tetramesitylporphyrinato)iron(III),4 and electrochemical behavior of the C60-p-tert-butylcalix[8]arene inclusion complex film on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode.5 Employed in conversion of a wide diversity of homopropargyl alcohols to γ-butyrolactones with excellent chemoselectivity.6
