Peptide and oligonucleotides reagents. Commonly used in activation of nucleoside phosphoramidites during solid-phase oligonucleotide synthesis 1, synthesis of nucleoside phosphoramidites 2, synthesis of novel nucleosides 3,4, synthesis of 1-alkyl dicyanoimidazole derivatives and as a precursor to 2-bromo-4,5-dicyanoimidazole 5.  It is an alternative to the tetrazole-based activators and is less acidic but is a much more nucleophilic activator.
